India’s ODI captain Shubman Gill openly criticized the team’s fitness management following their 2-1 series defeat in England. According to RevSportz, India lost the final ODI at Lord’s by 27 runs on Sunday, a match that exposed multiple injury issues within the squad.
Several key players were sidelined throughout the England tour due to muscle injuries. Hardik Pandya missed the entire ODI series with a quadriceps strain, while Nitish Kumar Reddy was also ruled out for a similar reason. Harshit Rana and Varun Chakravarthy returned after rehabilitation at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence but had previously suffered injuries during the T20I segment of the tour.
Washington Sundar’s hamstring injury in Cardiff ruled him out of the last ODI, and Jasprit Bumrah was absent from the Lord’s match due to an impact injury. Without Bumrah, India conceded a hefty total of 387 runs in the series decider. The recurring theme of muscle injuries among players prompted Gill to address fitness concerns directly during the post-match press conference.
"If you look at the first squad we announced for the ODI series, at least five players didn’t feature in the Lord’s match," Gill said. "Losing one or two players is manageable, but when multiple players are missing after every game, it indicates a deeper issue."
Gill questioned whether the fitness protocols at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence are sufficient and called for a reassessment of the support staff responsible for conditioning and recovery. With the 2027 World Cup on the horizon, he emphasized the need for players to sustain fitness throughout longer tournaments.
"Our goal is the World Cup, where we need to play 11 consecutive matches. But currently, players struggle to complete even a two or three-match series without injury," Gill remarked. "This inconsistency forces us to shuffle combinations, disrupting our original plans."
India’s recent struggles include losses in three ODI series over the past 10 months—in Australia, against New Zealand at home, and now in England. Persistent fitness setbacks and form issues are major concerns as the team prepares for future competitions. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is likely to conduct a thorough review to address these challenges.
Why this matters
Fitness is a critical factor in a team’s ability to perform consistently, especially in high-stakes tournaments like the World Cup. Shubman Gill’s candid remarks highlight systemic issues that could impact India’s competitiveness on the global stage. Addressing these concerns promptly is essential for building a resilient squad capable of enduring rigorous international schedules.
As India eyes success in upcoming events, ensuring players’ physical readiness will be as important as their skills on the field.
