Indian weightlifting star Mirabai Chanu is gearing up for the upcoming Commonwealth Games with a primary focus on the Asian Games, which remains her ultimate goal. In an exclusive interview with RevSportz at the University of Wolverhampton's Performance Hub, Chanu shared insights into her fitness, training, and strategic approach ahead of these major competitions.
Chanu revealed that her preparations in Birmingham have been progressing smoothly. Having arrived early to train, she expressed optimism about India's medal prospects at the Commonwealth Games and is determined to clinch gold. She emphasized that her fitness is now at 100 percent, overcoming past issues that hampered her performance in previous Asian Games.
Addressing the challenge of managing her body weight across two tournaments, Chanu explained that she will compete in the 48 kg category at the Commonwealth Games and then adjust to 49 kg for the Asian Games. This transition requires careful monitoring and control to minimize physical strain, a task she is confident in managing.
While the Commonwealth Games serve as a stepping stone, Chanu maintains a dual focus on both events. "I want to perform my best in both competitions," she stated, "but the Asian Games are my ultimate target where I aim to improve and hopefully secure a medal."
The pressure is palpable, with expectations for India to secure multiple medals in weightlifting. Chanu acknowledged this, noting the reduced number of sports at the Games means a greater emphasis on maximizing medal counts. Her team is prepared to fight for gold or silver wherever possible.
Chanu also praised the support provided by the Indian Weightlifting Federation and the government, who facilitated a month-long training camp at the Performance Hub. She credited her coach, Vijay Sharma, with overseeing every aspect of her preparation, including diet and recovery, ensuring she is in peak condition for competition.
