At least eight people were killed and five others injured after gunmen opened fire on residents following a funeral in Benue State, Nigeria, early Sunday morning. According to RT, the violence took place in the communities of Akpachi and Otukpo-Nobi within the Otukpo Local Government Area.

Benue State police spokesperson Udeme Edet reported that the attackers struck Otukpo-Nobi at approximately 6 a.m., setting fire to homes and a motorcycle before fleeing the scene. The assault came shortly after the completion of the wake and burial ceremonies for the late Mr. Adaje Okoh.

Governor Hyacinth Alia blamed suspected armed herdsmen for the violence, noting that the Akpachi community was raided between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. while residents were asleep. He condemned the attacks as senseless bloodshed aimed at undermining the state's progress and directed security forces to intensify patrols, track down the assailants, and increase manpower to prevent such incidents from recurring.

Amnesty International Nigeria has reported a higher death toll, citing at least ten fatalities, with several individuals missing and many others seriously wounded. Local residents and officials, as referenced by Reuters, indicated the weekend’s violence could have resulted in as many as 18 deaths.

Benue State has long been plagued by violent clashes between farming and pastoral communities struggling over land and water resources. The region experienced a devastating attack last year in the Yelewata community that claimed around 150 lives.

The recent violence sparked protests, with youth carrying victims’ bodies to the palace of the traditional Idoma ruler, demanding an end to repeated attacks and kidnappings. Local government chairman Maxwell Ogiri suggested the attacks might be linked to the killing of a herders’ association leader two weeks prior, according to Reuters.

Nigeria continues to face a severe security crisis, with jihadist groups like Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province frequently targeting villages, military installations, churches, and schools, as well as orchestrating mass kidnappings.

Why this matters

The recurring violence in Benue State reflects the broader challenges Nigeria faces in managing ethnic tensions and resource conflicts. These attacks not only threaten local communities but also hinder regional stability and development efforts. Increasing security measures is critical to preventing further bloodshed and restoring peace in affected areas.

As Nigeria grapples with multiple security threats, addressing the root causes of such conflicts remains essential for long-term peace and stability.
