Koel Mallick resigned from her Rajya Sabha seat on July 16, just over three months after taking oath on April 6. According to TV9 Bangla, this unexpected move came shortly after her meeting with Union Minister and BJP leader Bhupendra Yadav. Her resignation has been accepted, sparking widespread speculation about her political future.

Addressing these speculations, Sukanta Majumdar, another Union Minister and former president of the West Bengal BJP, provided insights during the Rath Yatra event in Howrah on Thursday. Majumdar indicated that Koel is expected to follow the path of three former Trinamool Congress MPs—Susmita Dev, Prakash Chik Baraik, and Sukhendu Shekhar Roy—who resigned from their Rajya Sabha seats and rejoined as BJP candidates.

Majumdar emphasized, "Just as the three MPs resigned and returned to the Rajya Sabha, Koel Mallick will do the same." The three former MPs have recently joined the BJP and are contesting Rajya Sabha elections on BJP tickets, signaling a strengthening BJP presence in the Upper House.

He further added, "The BJP's strength in the Rajya Sabha is gradually increasing because there are many tasks left to serve the people's interests, which BJP intends to accomplish in the coming days." This comment reinforces the party's strategy to consolidate its influence in West Bengal and nationally.

Why this matters

Koel Mallick's resignation and possible re-entry to Rajya Sabha under the BJP banner highlight the ongoing political realignments in West Bengal. The BJP's growing presence in the state's political landscape could significantly impact upcoming elections and policy directions. Such moves also reflect the party's efforts to bring influential figures from rival parties into its fold, thereby strengthening its position.

As Koel Mallick transitions from Tollywood to politics, her decisions and alliances will be closely watched as indicators of the BJP's expanding footprint in Bengal.
