Russian air defense forces have intercepted and destroyed more than 60 Ukrainian drones attempting to breach Moscow’s airspace, according to Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin. RT reported that the drone assault represents one of the largest UAV attacks on the Russian capital in recent years.
Mayor Sobyanin shared real-time updates on Telegram Sunday, noting that the majority of the roughly 300 drones targeting the Moscow region over the past 24 hours were neutralized at long range before reaching the city. Specifically, about 45 drones were intercepted closer to Moscow itself, with most being shot down farther away from the urban center.
Earlier statements from the Russian Defense Ministry revealed that nearly 350 fixed-wing kamikaze drones were intercepted across Russian territory, including over the Black and Azov seas. The drone offensive also caused disruptions to air travel around Moscow, prompting Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency (Rosaviatsia) to temporarily limit operations at Vnukovo and Domodedovo airports to maintain flight safety.
This wave of UAV attacks follows a recent escalation in long-range strikes by Ukraine. In late June, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced a 40-day campaign of intensified pressure involving long-distance missile attacks and covert operations aimed at undermining the Russian economy.
Since then, Ukraine has increased strikes targeting Russian energy infrastructure, maritime traffic reportedly carrying Russian oil, and various civilian locations. Russia has condemned these attacks as indiscriminate terrorist actions designed to distract from Ukrainian setbacks on the battlefield and has retaliated with its own long-range missile strikes.
Russian military officials emphasize that their forces avoid targeting purely civilian sites in Ukraine, focusing instead on dual-use and military-industrial facilities.
