Russia has extended an offer to India for the joint production of the cutting-edge T-90MS tank, aiming to strengthen defense collaboration and accelerate India's tank modernization at a reduced cost. RT reported that a Rosoboronexport (ROE) spokesperson revealed this initiative as a potential next phase in Russian-Indian tank sector cooperation.
The T-90MS, an export variant of Russia's latest T-90M series developed by Uralvagonzavod under Rostec, presents an upgrade opportunity for India’s armored fleet. India already operates substantial numbers of T-72 and T-90S tanks, which its defense industry has been actively upgrading.
According to ROE, the co-production plan would roll out in stages, initially involving the delivery of technological kits for assembly at Indian facilities, followed by the localization of component manufacturing. The company highlighted that existing transferred technologies provide a solid technical base, significantly cutting costs and reducing the time required to establish T-90MS production in India.
Earlier this year, Rostec CEO Sergey Chemezov praised the T-90MS's battlefield performance, describing it as superior to NATO counterparts. The tank incorporates advanced technologies, many currently battle-tested, including a comprehensive protection suite with explosive reactive armor, slat screens, electronic warfare against UAVs, and active defense systems.
The T-90MS features a new digital onboard fire-control system, integrating information-command capabilities that enhance targeting and combat efficiency. It is armed with upgraded artillery rounds and guided missiles, boosting its firepower significantly.
A Uralvagonzavod representative told TASS in May that Russian troops operating the T-90M in Ukraine noted its exceptional combat effectiveness, favorably comparing it to Western main battle tanks like the American M1 Abrams and German Leopard 2, whose battlefield performance has faced scrutiny.
ROE emphasized that the T-90MS platform can seamlessly incorporate various Indian-made systems, with many components unified with those used in India’s existing T-72 and T-90S tanks. This compatibility simplifies crew training, maintenance, and equipment standardization.
India’s history with Russian tanks dates back to the 1960s, with a significant 2001 agreement allowing licensed production of T-90S tanks domestically, known locally as the T-90 Bhishma. Over 1,000 units have been produced at the Heavy Vehicles Factory in Avadi, Chennai.
Currently, India is undertaking a $7.8 billion, five-year program to modernize its armored vehicles, extending the service life and combat readiness of 790 T-72 Ajeya tanks, 200 T-90 Bhishma tanks, 500 BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicles, and 230 armored recovery vehicles. ROE is offering to integrate T-90MS technical solutions into this ongoing modernization effort.
Furthermore, Russia expressed willingness to collaborate on developing future armored vehicles alongside India’s ambitious Future Ready Combat Vehicle (FRCV) program, which plans to acquire 1,770 next-generation main battle tanks to replace the aging T-72 fleet.
